History

Cheerleading has been present at UBC since the origin of the University in 1916, however, it was under the title of “Yell Leading”. Side game cheer continued for many years at the university, taking many forms of dance and cheers. It evolved into what we know today as cheerleading in 1996. During this time, the Steveston High School team lost funding from their school and decided to become the first All-Star team in the lower mainland. To raise funds for competitions, this team performed at UBC basketball and football teams.
In 1997, this team became an integral part of UBC culture and officially formed the “UBC Allstars” - and so started the first collegiate cheer team in BC. This team consisted of many athletes, including students from SFU. The team formally passed hands to Paul Sachdev in 2001, who grew into one of the top collegiate teams in BC. At one point in the early 2000s, it was recognized as a varsity team with the university and had won Canadian Nationals. Unfortunately in 2003, Paul Sachdev passed away in a car accident, leaving behind a large legacy with the team. Over the years, it has passed the hands of many coaches including Benson Ho, Pete Parrota (OKfirestorm), Karen Fraser (Midnight Cheer), Michael Donovan (Flight Cheer), Sandy Cheng, Sidney Quesnelle, and Eshana Sharma.
In 2023, the team was taken over by assistant coaches Lana Fuenning and Melanie Martens. During their inaugural season, they were able to establish the team as an AMS club and gained official recognition from the University.
